Green Society – District Thrust Area (RID 3131)
In 2020, Rotary International introduced its 7th Area of Focus – Supporting the Environment, reinforcing Rotary’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainability. Rotary believes that creating a cleaner and greener environment is a shared responsibility of all stakeholders in society.
Aligned with this vision, Green Society has been identified as the District Thrust Project of RID 3131 for the last three years. The project aims to create awareness among housing societies and MSMEs, provide technical guidance for green initiatives, connect them with reliable green product and service providers, support implementation, assess progress, and recognize outstanding efforts.
The initiative has expanded into multiple verticals. Green Society focuses on housing societies, Green Factory promotes sustainable practices in manufacturing MSMEs, and the newly launched Green School initiative aims to create eco-friendly school campuses through solar energy systems, rainwater harvesting, waste segregation and composting, plastic recycling, plantation, and sustainability training for students, staff, parents, and the community.
So far, the project has reached more than 5,000 housing societies and MSMEs through social media, presentations, brochures, and newsletters. Fourteen awareness sessions have been conducted, covering over 800 societies and MSMEs. Rotary Green Society Awards have been presented to 25 housing societies and 5 MSMEs for their exemplary green initiatives. The district has successfully organized the Green Expo in Pune for two consecutive years. Under the Green School initiative, 20 schools have been identified and implementation work has already begun.
The upcoming Green Expo 2026 is scheduled for 28th February and 1st March 2026 at Sambhaji Uddyan, Pune, with preparations currently in full swing.
The project is supported by key partners including Pune District Cooperative Housing Society and Apartment Federation, Ecological Society, Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), and Shroff Foundation.
All Rotary Clubs in the district are encouraged to actively participate, as Green Society is the District Thrust Area identified by District Governor Rtn.
