Mission Jal Punarjeevan: Reviving Water Resources, Restoring Communities

Across hundreds of villages in Pune District, community borewells run dry every year between January and June due to declining groundwater levels, erratic rainfall, and the near absence of organised aquifer recharge. In many talukas, pre-monsoon water levels have fallen to 20 -40 metres below ground level, severely affecting rural water security.

Surveys across Gram Panchayats reveal the seriousness of the crisis: nearly two-thirds report multiple dried-up handpumps, over half face recurring domestic water shortages, and women and girls spend up to three hours daily fetching water during summer months. Many villages rely on tanker water, often of poor quality.

To address this challenge, Rotary International District 3131 signed a three-year tripartite MOU in November 2025 with Pune Zilla Parishad and  Urdhvam Environmental Technologies Pvt. Ltd. to recharge 1,000 borewells  across Pune District. The initiative spans the tenures of three successive District Governors, demonstrating a long-term district commitment. A dedicated District Borewell Recharge Committee has been constituted to provide strategic oversight, support clubs, and ensure accountability.

Besides the 600 plus borewells recharged by various clubs in the district, another major initiative under this framework by RC Khadki is Global Grant GG2688623 — Mission Jal Punarjeevan — covering 200 borewells  across Khed, Ambegaon, Shirur, and Junnar talukas. Supported by The Rotary Foundation and Rotary Club of Mühlacker-Enzkreis, Germany, the project launched on 3 May 2026. Nearly 100 borewells have already been recharged.

The District Borewell Team will also assist Rotary clubs in preparing Global Grants and presenting borewell recharge projects to CSR partners, helping scale this sustainable water initiative across the district.
