Features from Avenue Directors Back
Rotary International's Basic Education and Literacy:A Transformative Avenue by DLCC Rtn Prof Dr Shilpagauri Prasad Ganpule, DLCC, Rotary District 3131 (RY 2025-26) Foundation Director, Rotary Club of Chinchwad-Pune

Basic Education and Literacy is one of the most powerful avenues of service of Rotary International. It upholds the belief that literacy is not merely the ability to read and write, but the gateway to dignity, empowerment, and economic independence. Rotary’s literacy vision encompasses access to quality education, teacher training, digital learning, reduction of school dropouts, and strengthening of community participation in education systems. The salient features of this avenue include improving foundational literacy, promoting girl-child education, enhancing adult literacy, supporting skill-based learning, and creating sustainable educational infrastructure.
In India, Rotary has translated this global vision into impactful grassroots initiatives. The flagship T-E-A-C-H program of Rotary India focuses on Teacher Support, E-learning, Adult Literacy, Child Development, and Happy Schools. Under the Adult Literacy component, Rotary India has implemented large-scale adult education programmes aimed at functional literacy, financial literacy, and digital awareness. Through structured modules, trained volunteers, and community centers, thousands of adults—especially women—have gained the confidence to read, write, manage finances, and access government schemes. The program goes beyond alphabets; it empowers individuals to participate actively in society and improve their livelihoods.
Rotary India’s initiatives also include establishment of digital classrooms, remedial coaching for underprivileged students, distribution of sanitary pads for menstrual hygiene awareness, skill development workshops, and transformation of government schools into “Happy Schools” with proper sanitation, drinking water, and learning facilities. These projects ensure that education is inclusive, equitable, and holistic.

My Rotary journey began in 2001 when I joined the Rotary Club of Chinchwad-Pune. Over the years, I had the opportunity to serve in various District Committees—Women in Rotary, Public Image, Peace Building and Conflict Resolution, Basic Education and Literacy, and New Generation Service Exchange. Each portfolio deepened my understanding of Rotary’s multidimensional service ethos and strengthened my commitment to community engagement.

Serving as the District Literacy Committee Chair (DLCC) in Rotary District 3131 was a truly enriching chapter of my journey. It was a privilege to work with a dynamic team led by District Governor Rtn Santosh Marathe, under the wise mentorship of PDG Rtn Pramod Jejurikar and with the guidance of Director Rtn Vasantrao Malunjkar. Together, we ensured that literacy initiatives were structured, measurable, and sustainable.
Being in the education field for the last 32 years, this responsibility resonated deeply with my professional mission. The integration of academic experience with Rotary’s service platform created a meaningful synergy. Witnessing adults sign their names for the first time and children stepping confidently into improved classrooms reaffirmed my belief that literacy is the most transformative tool of social change.
