Rotary Club of Walhekarwadi Back

Celebrating Culture, Fostering Peace: Rotary Club of Walhekarwadi Promotes Harmony Through Heritage.

The Rotary Club of Walhekarwadi launched a powerful initiative this year during the iconic Bagaad Yatra—a 125-year-old tradition celebrated with great devotion during Hanuman Janmotsav. Recognizing the importance of peace through cultural understanding, the club aligned this effort with Rotary International's area of focus: Peace and Conflict Resolution.

In an increasingly diverse and modernizing community, cultural disconnect often leads to misunderstanding. The club’s vision was to use this grand festival as a platform to instill pride, awareness, and a sense of belonging amongst the younger generation and newly settled residents.

"Traditions have the power to unite generations. Through this initiative, they aim to transform cultural pride into a source of peace and shared identity," said Govind Jagdale, President, Rotary Club of Walhekarwadi.

Legacy for the Next Generation

The club’s project titled “Legacy for the Next Generation” featured informative displays on the historical and spiritual elements of the yatra—Galkari (ceremonial calls), Bagaad construction, Ringan (ritual circle runs), and their symbolic relevance. Visitors engaged with these exhibits, sparking meaningful conversations about tradition, unity, and social harmony.

A dedicated Rotary Booth at the yatra site attracted hundreds who read about the cultural significance of the festival. Visitors expressed deep appreciation for Rotary’s efforts in connecting history with contemporary civic engagement.

"This cultural movement is not only about preserving history—it’s about shaping the future by giving our youth a sense of belonging," said Pradeep Walhekar, Founder President of the club.

Shri Ram Doot Award 2025: Honouring Wellness for Peace

As part of the Janmotsav celebrations, Rotary organized the Shri Ram Doot Award 2025, recognizing individuals who have made remarkable contributions in the fields of health, yoga, fitness, and sports. These fields were chosen as they reflect the values represented by Lord Hanuman—strength, devotion, and public service.

The award ceremony became a moment of community pride and inspiration, as wellness was linked to the broader theme of peace and social well-being.

"Health and harmony are two sides of the same coin. When we honor those who nurture society’s well-being, we take one more step towards peace," shared Ganesh Bora, Convenor of the initiative.

A Global Exchange: German Students Embrace Indian Culture

Adding a cross-cultural highlight to the celebration, six management students from Germany visited Walhekarwadi on a Rotary-sponsored learning tour. Their visit included witnessing the Bagaad Yatra and engaging with the club’s environmental and social outreach projects.

The students were welcomed with traditional honors—garlands, symbolic gifts, and warm hospitality. They explored local initiatives addressing river and drain pollution, waste management, and sustainable living.

They described their experience as “transformative and unifying,” noting how cultural exchange can foster international friendship and mutual respect.

This visit not only broadened their understanding of India but also showcased how grassroots movements like Rotary can bridge global communities for a peaceful tomorrow.

"Experiencing the Bagad Yatra for the first time was truly special for all of us. We were amazed by the vibrant energy, devotion, and warmth of the people. Indian festivals, as we saw, go beyond rituals — they bring communities together with joy and deep cultural pride.

We are especially grateful to the Rotary Club of Walhekarwadi for welcoming us not just as guests, but as part of their family — with garlands, a sacred idol, and the traditional uparna. It was an unforgettable gesture.

This visit gave us more than memories — it gave us inspiration and a deep appreciation for the beautiful blend of tradition and modern values in Indian culture."
